40 Births Baby Vest Gift - I Made a Midwife

If you're a third year student midwife then hopefully you are looking ahead to achieving your milestone of supporting 40 vaginal births. If you would like a keepsake gift to give to the family of your 40th birth, I have had my original watercolour illustrations printed onto 100% cotton newborn baby vests. Designed by me and printed onto the vest by another small business mama.

I know these won't be for everyone! When I asked on a student midwife Facebook group, some felt it was in poor taste and presumptuous to give something the baby would wear, while others said they'd love one. But I want my student midwife shop to have as many things that students would like as possible! So I decided to offer a few for those who do like the idea. For those that don't - I've also made some wooden engraved medals, thank you cards, and clay tokens.

I don't see babies as photo props, and of course I don't think the midwife should detract from the mother's achievement. But midwives - and student midwives - deserve to celebrate their achievements and their impact, and your experience matters too. Where would mothers and where would birth be without midwives?❤️ I think students can celebrate themselves without it taking away from the birth itself.

What does 40 catches mean in midwifery?

Student midwives in the UK are required to attend and participate in a minimum of 40 vaginal births as part of their NMC training requirements. Reaching 40 catches is a significant milestone on the road to qualification.
