The walls of the womb have three layers; the myometrium is the thick smooth muscle layer in the middle, which has three layers of muscle within it:

- Outer layer of vertical muscles that contract to draw upwards during surges and build power at the fundus (the top of the womb)
- Middle layer of mesh-like muscle interwoven with blood vessels, this layer is important for helping to release the placenta safely after birth by closing off blood vessels
- Inner layer of horizontal circular muscles that relax and move up to open the cervix during surges
