Muscles of the Womb Diagram PDF Download

*Includes two versions - one with waves and one with surges* This hypnobirthing handout shows the middle layer of the womb (the myometrium) and summarises what each layer is doing in physiological birth.

The uterus is a thick-walled, pear shaped organ with a dome-shaped top called the fundus, and a narrow, cylindrical neck at the bottom called the cervix.

The walls of the womb have three layers; the myometrium is the thick smooth muscle layer in the middle, which has three layers of muscle within it:

- Outer layer of vertical muscles that contract to draw upwards during surges and build power at the fundus
- Middle layer of mesh-like muscle interwoven with blood vessels, this layer is important for helping to release the placenta safely after birth by closing off blood vessels
- Inner layer of horizontal circular muscles that relax and move up to open the cervix during surges
