Set of 4 midwifery abbreviation flash cards for student midwives - for badge reel, lanyard or pocket.
What do all those abbreviations in maternity notes actually mean? If you're a student midwife on placement trying to decode notes full of acronyms you've never seen before, these cards were made for you. And if you're starting soon and would like to get used to the abbreviations you will be seeing on placement.
They started with a request from a student midwife who got in touch asking if I would make abbreviation cards she could clip to her badge reel, because she couldn't find anything that she liked the look of - and these are the result!
What's in the set?
Four double-sided cards covering antenatal, birth, postnatal and neonatal abbreviations, listed A-Z on each card. The cards arrive fixed together on a book ring with a lobster clasp included, so you can clip them to a badge reel, lanyard, bag, or wherever works best for you. You can take off the lobster clasp if you don't need it.
What are they made from?
Thick 450gsm card with gloss lamination. They can be wiped clean if needed, but they are not waterproof as they are made of card and not plastic - so don't get them soggy!
Are they easy to read?
Really easy. Even though each card fits a lot of information in, the layout has been carefully designed so everything is clear and readable at a glance. No squinting, no tiny text that's impossible to read quickly.
What midwifery abbreviations are covered?
The cards cover the abbreviations student midwives most commonly encounter when reading maternity notes, across antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and neonatal settings. Before finalising the list I consulted qualified midwives and student midwives from a range of NHS trusts, and did my very best to create the most helpful and accurate set possible.
Can I add a student midwife charm?
Yes! You can choose to add a student midwife charm made from recycled acrylic with original artwork designed by me, produced here in the UK. If you'd like a different charm I have some with a baby in the womb too you could choose - let me know.
Who are these maternity abbreviations cards for?
- Student midwives on placement or at university
- New maternity support workers
- Anyone working in or rotating through a maternity setting
- Midwifery students preparing for OSCEs or written assessments
- Anyone looking for a practical and thoughtful gift for a student midwife
Will these abbreviations be the same at my Trust?
NHS trusts can have their own preferred abbreviations and documentation standards, and these do vary. These cards are designed to help you decode abbreviations when reading other people's notes. They are not a guide to which abbreviations you should use in your own documentation. Always follow your own trust's approved list. By purchasing you are accepting responsibility for checking which abbreviations are approved in your placement Trust.
