Do Student Midwives *Need* Dilation Beads?
Share

If you have spent any time scrolling through social media videos by students sharing what they've bought ready to start studying, you have likely spotted colourful strings of beads clipped onto placement lanyards and clinical bags.
They look lovely, but if you are just starting your training, you might wonder: What actually are dilation beads, and how do they help?
Mastering cervical dilation assessments - judging centimetres from 1cm all the way to a full 10cm dilation during vaginal examinations - is an important skill to learn for NHS midwives. Textbook diagrams are helpful, but nothing truly replaces building physical muscle memory and spatial awareness. That is why student midwives use tools like dilation beads as a hands-on study tool to help visualize and practice scale on the go!
Do student midwives really *need* dilation beads?
I've seen mixed opinions online! Some students swear by their dilation beads, calling them an absolute lifesaver for building confidence - others will tell you they didn't end up finding them helpful at all.
So they aren't a critical addition to your placement bag, and you certainly won't fail your placement if you don't own a set. However, learning to estimate cervical dilation accurately is a skill that takes time to master.
If you are someone who benefits from hands-on learning, likes having a visual reference close at hand on your lanyard, or simply wants a comforting, grounding fidget tool during long shifts, a set of beads can be a wonderful companion.
Think of them less as a strict academic necessity and more as a helpful, comforting tool to ease you through the steep learning curve of your training - or a meaningful keepsake to celebrate how far you've come!
How they work in practice: A set features ten 10mm beads, meaning each individual stone represents 1 centimetre.
By sliding your fingers across the Imperial Jasper stones, you can physically feel the difference between 3cm and 7cm.
It allows you to practice estimating distances blindly—muscle memory you can build while sitting on the bus or waiting for a lecture to start.

Why my dilation beads are special
When I set out to design my own version, I wanted to create something beyond standard cheap plastic or silicone ones. While you will certainly find cheaper alternatives out there, I wanted to create a meaningful tool that students would be proud to wear or gift.
Each handmade strand features:
- Genuine 10mm (approx as they are a natural stone) imperial jasper crystals: Beautiful, natural tactile stones chosen for their gorgeous earthy tones and grounding energy.
- Original art charm: An acrylic charm featuring my hand-illustrated placenta or vulva artwork, printed on one side.
- Secure hardware: Strung securely on a metal eye pin loop with a sturdy lobster clasp, making it effortless to clip onto your lanyard, badge reel, or placement bag so it is always within reach.
- Reiki cleansed: As a reiki practitioner, I personally cleanse every set of crystals before they ship out to ensure they arrive ready to give you love and support on your midwifery journey.
A note on clinical cleanliness: Because these are designed to clip onto your personal lanyard or bag as a study aid. —bnot a medical device used near patients — they are perfectly safe for placement.
To keep your Imperial Jasper stones clean , simply wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap. (It's recommended to avoid harsh clinical chemical wipes, which can strip the natural luster of the gemstones).
Imperial Jasper: A Stone of Strength for Student Midwives
Your path as a student midwife is one of immense dedication, learning, and deep emotional investment. Imperial Jasper is a wonderful stone of strength that offers unique energetic properties to support you through the intense moments of training:
- Emotional strength & stability: Midwifery is as emotionally demanding as it is rewarding. Imperial Jasper is known for its calming energy, helping to reduce stress and provide balance during tough shifts and exams.
- Grounding & endurance: With long hours and demanding placements, staying cantered is essential. This stone promotes stability and perseverance, allowing you to approach your work with confidence.
- Focus & clarity: Retaining knowledge and making critical decisions under pressure is key. Imperial Jasper is believed to enhance concentration and problem-solving skills.
- Compassion & connection: A nurturing stone that resonates with the heart chakra, encouraging deep empathy and intuition in practice.
Please note: These beads are designed as a study tool and decorative accessory, not a medical device.
A great gift for a new student midwife
Whether you are starting your degree this September, celebrating a milestone, or looking for a thoughtful "good luck" present for a daughter, friend, or partner heading into midwifery, these make an incredible gift. They combine everyday clinical utility with a touch of mindfulness, making them a keepsake they can cherish right through to qualification and beyond.

An aside about cervical dilation...
While dilation beads are a helpful tactile tool for practicing clinical skills, I want to be open about my personal perspective on vaginal examinations in birth. Although I want to offer these study aids for student midwives who must learn these assessments for their degree requirements, that does not mean I necessarily agree with routine cervical dilation checks in the way they are used in the NHS.
I believe that vaginal examinations are not always the best or most accurate way of determining how far along a woman is in labour.
Too often, women are led to feel that they do not have a genuine choice when it comes to consenting to these intimate internal examinations - and decisions about their care and their level of 'risk' are made based on these estimations - when two different midwives could make different judgements, and also the womb can open or close quickly depending on the conditions and hormones and loads of other things.
We don't birth according to a linear schedule and it concerns me that women are told they are not 'allowed' to do certain things unless they consent to a vaginal examination.
